Who’s Going To The Shire?
According to The Telegraph, David Tennant, the departing Doctor Who could be about to make a major big screen appearance as Bilbo Baggins in Guillermo del Toro‘s The Hobbit. He is apparently on the ahem… short list… along with James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe for the role of the adventuring young hobbit (Ian Holm is supposed to be making an appearance as old Bilbo).
It’s an interesting choice i have to admit i’d never even thought of before, but I can see Tennant in the role. He does have quite a hobbity face. ;) Daniel is great as Harry Potter, but to leap from one huge franchise to another doesn’t fit well with me. I’d like to see him branch out into something different. James McAvoy’s name has been floating around for a while, but i think he would also be a really good fit for Bilbo.
If Tennant does get the part, that could scupper the rumoured Doctor Who movie that is supposed to be in the works, as David would be tied up in Middle Earth (aka New Zealand) for the next couple of years.
All should be revealed at next week’s in San Diego Comic-Con where producer Peter Jackson is appearing. More news as we get it!

I thought Paterson Joseph was the new Bilbo?
I also thought Holm was dead. Really I did. Definitely not Radcliffe though, he can’t act, though commercially it might be seen as a safe move because it would guarantee all those Potter fans would make the jump to middle earth. It would depress me immensely.
Please god not him. He’s already ruined Doctor Who. Isnt one beloved franchise enough? He’s also far too gangly for it, he would look wierd when turned into a CGI midget.
Bilbo needs to be rotund, bumbling and a little abrasive. It’s a shame Holm is getting too old for it now, he would never get through the action scenes convincingly. I think Tom Hollander would be perfect for it.
