The Aqua Teen Hunger Force

Master Shake and Meatwad

Matt Maiellaro & Dave Willis’s world of  the Aqua Teen Hunger Force it has to be said, is a someone surreal one… Aqua Teen Hunger Force consists of Frylock – a floating packet of fries, who is the brains and rationality of the group, Master Shake – a sadistic, lazy milkshake who loves to torture the force’s 3rd member, Meatwad – a gentle mutant meatball. The 3 live together in New Jersey next door to the wife-beater-wearing Carl, who spends most of his time indulging in sport, rock music, booze and women.

Each week the trio get into a variety of adventures, ranging from Meatwad and Shake being eaten by a pet snake, to having their cable tv stolen by aliens using a *ahem* Fargate (not at all like the ‘gate’ in the popular scifi movie, or tv franchise of the same name), to Shake and Carl splitting the cost of buying a a mail-order bride from Chechnya… Fair to say it’s not your traditional cartoon show! Weird, funny, and very very surreal.

Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law

Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law

How to describe Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law… Imagine  you’d stepped into a parallel dimension, where some of those characters from the Saturday morning cartoons you watched as a kid had gone out and got real jobs. The star, Harvey Birdman (of 70s Hanna-Barbera cartoon Birdman and the Galaxy Trio) is now working as a third-rate lawyer at an upscale law firm. It’s not clear whether Harvey ever went to law school, but he definitely knows the lingo and has a nice suit – even if he still insists on wearing his superhero get-up underneath.

What I find so amaxing about Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law is they are using the genuine characters from those 60s/70s Hanna-Barbera cartoons. Whether it’s defending Secret Squirrel after he’s arrested for indecent exposure (everytime he opens his raincoat to use a ‘special gadget’ he’s accused of flashing), or defending against a lawsuit from The Jetsons, who have come back from the future (2002…) to sue the people of earth for destroying the environment. Other highlights for Harvey Birdman – defender of ‘toons in trouble’ include keeping Shaggy and Scooby-Doo out of jail for possession, representing Fred Flintstone over alleged Mafia connections, and lead the trial of Yogi Bear’s sidekick Boo-Boo who is suspected of being notorious eco-terrorist: ‘The Unabooboo’.

I really enjoyed Harvey Birdman. It’s a great show with some laugh out loud moments, particularly for anyone old enough to remember the original cartoons.

The DVD box sets contain 90 episodes, and over 7 hours of extras with music videos, never-before-seen footage and deleted scenes, as well as show commentaries by the cast & crew.
