As many of you will know, there is a new Star Trek TV series coming in January 2017, and thanks to the panel at SDCC today, we now have a name (and a video) – Star Trek: Discovery.
The new ship, the USS Discovery NCC-1031, has a very interesting design to it. Very original Trek, but with a hint of Klingon Warbird to it…
The new series, which is under the helm of tv genius Bryan Fuller, is currently casting actors, and recently announced David Semel (Madam Secretary, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Madam Secretary) would direct and exec produce the first episode.
The official synopsis of the show from CBS currently reads:
The brand-new Star Trek will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.
The issue of ‘contemporary themes’ was discusses quite a lot during the panel, which included Scott Bakula, Michael Dorn, Jeri Ryan, Brent Spiner, and the legendary William Shatner. There was a talk about how the things that are going on worldwide right now are very disturbing, with Fuller commenting “Individuality should be celebrated. Star Trek celebrates diversity. It seems like a great statement from Gene Roddenberry, who felt the human race just has to get along.” He continued “We do have to celebrate a progression of our species because right now we need a little help.”
Star Trek: Discovery will air in the UK on Netflix from January 2017
