Alec Baldwin, Harris Ford, Ben Affleck, Chris Pine and now John Krasinski (The Office US) will take on the role of Jack Ryan for the character’s first outing on the small screen.

Created by author Tom Clancy, Jack Ryan is the CIA agent who we first saw on screen helping Sean Connery’s Soviet (via Scotland) submarine commander defect to the US in The Hunt for Red October, played by Baldwin. Ford then took over the role for Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger, then Affleck for The Sum of All Fears, and most recently Pine in Shadow Recruit.

This version brings us an up-to-date reinvention of the character, as an up-and-coming CIA analyst, who uncovers a pattern in terrorist communication that puts him at the centre a plot to develop a new breed of terrorism, which threatens destruction on a global scale.

In a rare move, Amazon has given the show a 10 episode, straight-to-series order, rather than putting it to a public pilot vote. Carlton Cuse (Lost, The Strain, Colony) and Graham Roland (Lost, Fringe) will serve as showrunners, and it’s being produced by Platinum Dunes, Skydance Media and Paramount TV.

It’s no great surprise there is a will to continue the franchise, as it has grossed over one billion dollars worldwide since the first movie was released in 1990.

Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan will be shot across the USA, Europe and Africa. No news on a release date yet, but we will keep you informed.
