Netflix To Co-Produce Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency With BBC America

by Dave Elliott

BBC America’s upcoming take on the Douglas Adams book Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency will now be a co-production with Netflix it has been announced.

The show, which stars Samuel Barnett (Penny Dreadful) as Dirk Gently, and Elijah Wood (Lord Of The Rings, Wilfred) as reluctant sidekick Todd, will launch on the streaming service in December 2016, in 100 territories outside of the US, and that includes the UK.

For those of you unfamiliar with this particular Douglas Adams work, Dirk Gently is a somewhat unorthodox detective, in that he takes a ‘holistic’ approach to solving crime, based on the ‘fundamental interconnectedness of all things.’ This leads him, and his rather reluctant sidekick Todd, though a bizarre adventure crossing unlikely paths with a bevy of wild and sometimes dangerous characters. Each season features an overarching mystery, with each episode bringing them a few random steps closer to the truth.

This is not the first time on tv for Dirk Gently, with the BBC having previously produced 4 episodes between 2010-2012 starring Stephen Mangan (Episodes, Green Wing). There was also a radio version starring Harry Enfield & Billy Boyd which ran for 2 seasons on BBC Radio 4.

The show is adapted and run by Max Landis (Victor Frankenstein, Chronicle and son of Hollywood director John), and backed by BBC America, Netflix, AMC Studios, Ideate Media and IDW Entertainment. Landis is also Exec Producer, alongside Robert Cooper (Dark Matter, all the Stargate TV shows).

Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency will air in the US on BBC America from the 22nd October, then around the world (and in the UK) on Netflix in December 2016.
