Greg Berlanti Developing DC’s Black Lightning For FOX

As if taking over The CW wasn’t enough, Greg Berlanti, along with Warner Bros TV, is now developing a new superhero drama for FOX based on DC’s Black Lightning!

Black Lightning aka Jefferson Pierce first appear in 1977, and was one of DC’s first major African-American superheroes. Developed by Tony Isabella with Trevor Von Eeden, Jefferson Pierce is a superhero who had managed to hang up his ‘cape’ and get out of the ‘heroing’ business. But with a daughter hellbent on justice and a star student being recruited by a local gang, he’s pulled back into the fight as the wanted vigilante and DC legend Black Lightning. He is an olympic level athlete & skilled martial artist, who can also generate and manipulate electricity.

The show is being written by the husband and wife team Salim Akil & Mara Brock Akil (Being Mary Jane, The Game), who will also executive produce with Greg Berlanti & Sarah Schechter from Berlanti Productions.

Greg Berlanti is of course the man behind all of the DC/CW ‘Berlantiverse’ shows (Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, Legends), along with their fresh new take on the Archie comic book.

Fox have committed to a ‘put pilot’, which means they promise to air the pilot either as a one-off special or as part of a series. Obviously the intention is for it to be a series, but it’s a strong indication of Fox’s faith in Berlanti and the Akils. This is not the first comic book show on FOX in the US, who also run Gotham and Lucifer, both of which also come from Warner Bros TV.
