The Strain Renewed For 4th And Final Season

Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan’s vampire series The Strain has been picked up for a 4th and final season it has been announced.

Unlike a lot of dramas which have cancellation thrust upon them, The Strain was only designed to run for a limited number of episodes. The decision to end it has come from the show’s creators, not from the network. “We sincerely thank Carlton Cuse, Guillermo del Toro, Chuck Hogan and their creative team as well as the fantastic cast for three exciting seasons of The Strain,” commented Nick Grad of it’s US network FX. “Though we’re sad to see it go, we fully support the way in which they are crafting the fourth season’s dramatic conclusion.”

Showrunner Carlton Cuse commented after the announcement “Our original plan was for the series to last three years. Once we began telling that story it expanded to be more. After finishing the writing on season three, Guillermo, Chuck and I looked at our remaining story and felt the best version could be told in one more season. We have a fantastic plan for an exciting and climactic season four. We are deeply grateful to FX for supporting our vision and for allowing us to end the show on our own timetable.”

The show, which sees a Head of the CDC, Dr. Ephraim ‘Eph’ Goodweather (Corey Stoll – House of Cards) lead a misfit band of people to battle a mysterious ancient virus which is ravaging through New York, is currently airing it’s 3rd season on W (channel formally know as Watch) in the UK. Eph is joined by Professor Abraham Setrakian (David Bradley – Harry Potter films, Game of Thrones), a Holocaust survivor who reveals the virus is actually controlled by an ancient evil called The Master, whom he has been tracking for years. They team up with Vasiliy Fet (Kevin Durand – Lost, Noah), a rat exterminator turned vampire hunter, Dutch Velders (Ruta Gedmintas – The Borgias, The Tudors), a hacker who was hired by the bad guys, but switched sides when she realised who and what they were, and Mr. Quinlan (Rupert Penry-Jones – Spooks, Whitechapel), a half-vampire, who is hellbent on bringing about The Master’s demise.

Although I will be sad to see The Strain end, it does make a nice change for a show to be genuinely concluded by the storytellers, and not because cancellation, or because it ran out of steam!

The Strain Season 3 is currently airing, Friday nights at 9pm on W (channel formally know as Watch).
