Vampires, zombies, time travels, and now CW plans to bring magic back to the fore, with Criminal Magic, a new show from iZombie writer Graham Norris and creator Rob Thomas.

Criminal Magic is being described as “The Departed meets The Vampire Diaries“, which is probably a mash-up you didn’t expect to see on your tv screens. Set in modern day Los Angeles, it follows two gang who are battling each other (and the cops), to gain control of a dangerous contraband – magic. The two main leads are a young woman who is hiding her “spectacular magical powers” and an undercover cop trying to survive in the “glamorous world of speakeasies, crime, and danger.”

Actor/writer Graham Norris worked as story editor on a number of episodes of iZombie, but has been developing two other shows with Rob Thomas for the network – A sci-fi drama called Tempest, and a contemporary take on Victor Hugo’s novel Les Misérables.

Rob Thomas is well known as the man behind Veronica Mars, iZombie, and developed 90210. If it gets the go ahead, it’ll be the 3rd Rob Thomas show on the CW, as he’s also developing a very interesting version of cult classic 80’s movie The Lost Boys into a tv series for the network. iZombie exec producers Danielle Stokdyk and Dan Etheridge are also on board to produce with Norris and Thomas.

As Criminal Magic is only in development at the moment, we may not see it anytime soon (or at all), but we’ll keep you updated if it goes anywhere.
