LEGO Dimensions Event Shows Off New Expansions!

Last Friday I was invited down to old London town to come and view the latest releases for Traveller’s Tales incredibly popular ‘toys-to-life’ game LEGO Dimensions. I’ll be honest with you, up until this point I’d been avoiding buying LEGO Dimensions, mainly due to my stunning lack of willpower when it comes to these sort of games… When you put together the words ‘collectible’ and ‘LEGO’, I knew it would get expensive. Then they gave me an XBox One Starter Pack… And now I have an entire LEGO Justice League sat next to my console… *sigh* Damn my lack of willpower…

But I digress… Back to the event. I arrived at what looked like a fairly unassuming office building in central London and was led downstairs to be greeted by the PR people, who handed me an itinerary, and pointed my down another flight of stairs. Descending, I arrived in a room filled with PS4s running a whole manner of the new content which includes the Gremlins Team PackE.T. The Extra-Terrestrial Fun PackSonic the Hedgehog & Adventure Time Level Packs, and the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them Story Pack.

Off from this central hub, there were various rooms, themed to various packs. The first one I entered was the Adventure Time area, where I got to play one of the brand new four-player competitive Battle Arenas which are a great addition to the game for LEGO Dimensions’ 2nd year on the market. Myself and a fellow journalist were pitched against each other as we tried to win a ‘capture the flag’ arena. “We’re alway conscious that games are expensive, so we were looking to add as much value as possible to every pack as we could,” commented TT’s Head Of Design, Arthur Parsons. “The Battle Arenas was a way of players being able to take the toys that they’ve got from year 1 and year 2, and give them another way of playing with those toys. Every single pack in year 2 has a unique Battle Arena.”

The next area I entered was based on Harry Potter, and they’d produced a brilliant recreation of Harry’s bedroom… i.e., the cupboard under the stairs. To be honest, I’m not sure what Harry was complaining about. It made a perfect little gaming nook, although admittedly, I did have a PS4 and TV in there, which Harry didn’t. Here I got to experience the crazy mashup that is LEGO Dimensions gameplay for the first time. This involved using various Potter characters, helped by Batman and Gandalf, as they tried to make portals appear around The Simpsons house… As I said, it’s a crazy crazy mash up world, but works so well in all it’s LEGO cuteness!

From there I was directed towards a Gremlin themed theatre along with 4 other journalist, to try out a 4-way ‘Tick, Tag, Boom!’ Battle Arena. This involves a giant bomb, which you roll toward your opponents, the objective being not to be the person with the bomb when it goes off! It’s somewhat hilarious seeing Batman being blown up and losing out on 1st place to Gizmo from Gremlins… The old Batman adage is true… Some days, you just can’t get rid of a bomb!

After a brief play in the Mission Impossible area, which involved being harnessed over a computer console in the style of IMF agent Ethan Hunt, I headed to my final stop – Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is the major new Story Pack released to coincide with the arrival of the movie. This includes 6 brand news levels and new LEGO Gateway bricks to build the Magical Congress of the United States of America on top the LEGO Toy Pad. In the game you play as Newt Scamander, with new, original dialogue voiced by Eddie Redmayne, as he runs around New York City using spells to collect his escaped magical creatures. It’s brilliant fun, and I had the experience enhanced by being able to play it whilst inside Scamander’s suitcase!

If you’ve not played LEGO Dimensions yet, it’s a crazy mash up world, full of all your favourite characters. From Harry Potter, to Ghostbusters (old and new). From Back To The Future to Adventure Time to The A-Team to Doctor Who… They have so many licenses it’s impossible not to find something that will appeal to you. Unless you don’t like LEGO… In which case, i weep for you, as you have no soul…

All the new LEGO Dimensions packs are available right now, just in time for Christmas, which is handy! If you want to hear the full interview we did with TT’s Head Of Design, Arthur Parsons, head over to this week’s Geektown Radio!
