‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Finds It’s First Crewmate In Michelle Yeoh
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon star Michelle Yeoh will be boarding the USS Discovery in Star Trek’s brand new tv series it has been revealed.
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country director Nicholas Meyer is serving as consulting producer on Star Trek: Discovery, and let slip in an interview with comingsoon.net that Yeoh had joined the series. Her exact role was not specified but it seems extremely likely she will be playing the female Lieutenant Commander lead. UPDATE: Latest reports are suggesting that she isn’t actually a crew member of the Discovery, but playing a character called Han Bo, who is leader of a ship called the Shenzhou, which will play a ‘big role’ in the show’s first season… So possibly the main antagonist?
Unlike previous Star Trek iterations, the plan with Discovery is for the lead role to focus on a Lieutenant Commander, rather than the ship’s captain. There are around 6 other main cast member roles yet to be filled, and the producers have promised a few more aliens than you would usually get on a Trek series.
Yeoh is of course well known as Yu Shu Lien in the Crouching Tiger movies, but also had a prominent role in the Sky 1 series Strike Back and more recently starred as Lotus in the Netflix series Marco Polo.
CBS has received a couple of bumps in the road bringing Star Trek: Discovery to screen, although it seems to now be back on track. Firstly the show’s release was moved back from Jan 2017 to May 2017 to allow more production time. Then it was announced Bryan Fuller would be stepping down as showrunner due to his commitments on other series, although he is still an exec producer, and will still be involved in the story process.
Star Trek: Discovery will begin streaming on Netflix UK in May 2017.
