CW Developing ‘Real Love’, A Sentient Computer Romantic Comedy

The CW have put into development a romantic comedy with a twist… In that one half of the couple is a sentient computer program.

Coming from Faking It writer Stefanie Leder, CBS TV Studios, and Michael Weatherly’s (Bull, NCIS) Solar Drive Productions, Real Love centres on the story of a brilliant female programmer who writes the code for ‘the perfect boyfriend’ but unexpectedly falls for her creation when he becomes self-aware.

Sentient computer systems have been a hot topic recently, with Westworld becoming a huge smash hit, and also the brilliant Humans for Channel 4. It’s not entirely clear from the brief synopsis if the computer she’s programming is going to be an android/synth of some sort, but given she’s fallen in love with it’s code, I suspect it’ll end up in some form of hard-bodied, hunky human form at some point.

If the idea behind this sounds familiar, you’re probably remembering the cult classic 1985 John Hughes movie Weird Science, where two boys (Anthony Michael Hall, Ilan Mitchell-Smith) create their perfect girlfriend, played by Kelly Le Brock. In this case, the gender roles are reversed, but the premise is extremely similar.

Stefanie Leder has written on a number of shows including Faking It, Melissa & Joey, Men at Work and Victorious. As it’s only in development, there’s no guarantee Real Love will go into full production, but we’ll keep you informed on it’s progress.
