Time Commanders Returns 12th December On BBC Four

by Dave Elliott

As we mentioned a few months ago, the BBC has recommissioned Time Commanders for a 3rd season, 10 years after season 2 ended, which is set to air Monday 12th December at 9pm on BBC Four.

For those of you too young to remember the original, the show places contestants as virtual generals in some of history’s greatest battles, to see if they can achieve victory when the real life generals may have failed. This is done using a computer simulation developed by Creative Assembly, the people behind the Total War video games.

Hosted by Gregg Wallace, episode one of the new season sees the Time Commanders head back to 202 BCE, where Rome has had enough of the upstart Carthaginian, Hannibal. Desperate to end his 16-year campaign of war against the Republic, one of Rome’s greatest generals, Scipio, is charged with freeing Italy from this menace. Scipio elects to fight Hannibal in his homeland, forcing him to return to Africa and protect the city of Carthage.

This time, a team of wrestlers will attempt to rewrite history by defeating Scipio and preventing him from taking the city. Playing Hannibal and his Carthaginians, they’ll be defending their home town. Up against them, will be a team of historical board game enthusiasts taking on the role of the Romans, in a fight that will set the course of European history for centuries to come.

Time Commanders airs Monday 12th December at 9pm on BBC Four.
