HIMYM Spin-off ‘How I Met Your Father’ In Development (again)

A spin-off from How I Met Your Mother called How I Met Your Father is in development it has been revealed… If you’re thinking “Didn’t they do this already?” you would be correct. Just as HIMYM was coming to a close, CBS started developing How I Met Your Dad, but ultimately passed on the show.

This Is Us exec producers Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger have now revived the idea, and it will be a be a female led version of HIMYM, using the same storytelling style, but none of the original cast. It’s less of a direct spin-off, and more a show which uses the same tropes and format of a parent (in this version the mother) revealing the story of how they met their husband.

The script is apparently being developed ‘on spec’ internally at 20th Television, the studio that developed the original show, and where Aptaker & Berger have an overall deal. HIMYM creators Carter Bays & Craig Thomas would serve as exec producers on the new series, but it’s not clear if they would have any further involvement, as they now have an exclusive deal with Sony Television.

Aptaker and Berger have a strong background in half-hour comedies, having worked on About a Boy, Grandfathered, and The Neighbors as writers and producers.

As this is very early in development, there is no guarantee How I Met Your Father will make it to broadcast, but we’ll keep you updated if and when we hear more.
