American Crime Story & Donald Glover’s Atlanta Delayed Till 2018

News dropped today that two shows made for US network FX will be delayed until 2018 – true crime drama American Crime Story, and Donald Glover’s brilliant half-hour comedy, Atlanta.

For Atlanta, the reason is simple. Donald Glover’s production schedule. As we announced back in October, he has been (pretty perfectly) cast as young Lando Calrissian in Phil Lord and Christopher Miller upcoming Han Solo: A Star Wars Story. That is currently in pre-production, and will begin shooting this year, which pretty much stops him from writing and shooting a new series of his comedy in time for it to be released in 2017.

Over on Ryan Murphy’s American Crime Story, there are a few issues holding that up. Partly due to “material” according to FX CEO John Landgraf – i.e. with People vs. OJ, they had Jeffrey Toobin book ‘The Run of His Life’ providing the backbone of the show. With the 2nd season, which is based around the US government’s handling of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, they don’t have one solid source to work from, meaning it’s taking longer to develop. The second issue is that the series is being shot in New Orleans. The problem there is, well, hurricanes… Which means a production company can only get insurance to shoot at certain, non-hurricane season, times of the year.

What FX are saying though, is that the 3rd season of American Crime Story, which will focus on the murder of Gianni Versace, will actually be filmed before Katrina, but air around six months after it.

Both shows have been big award winners for FX. Atlanta picked up ‘Best Comedy Series’ and Glover ‘Best Actor in a Comedy Series’ for the show at the Golden Globes this week. American Crime Story has also picked up two Globes, one of ‘Best Limited Series’ and one for Sarah Paulson as ‘Best Actress In A Limited Series’. It also picked up nine Emmy awards last September. You can imagine FX are extremely keen to have both shows return, even if there is a bit of a wait!
