Ben Affleck No Longer Directing ‘The Batman’, Will Still Star
Ben Affleck had made a few comments recently about not wanted to direct the upcoming Dark Knight solo movie ‘The Batman’ unless the script was 100% perfect. It now seems he’s not at all comfortable trying to direct and act in a movie of this size either.
“There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions,” commented Affleck in a statement. “Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”
Whilst I am disappointed to lose Ben as a director, I can see his point. It’s suspected the script he wrote with Geoff Johns will probably still be the basis of the new movie, although I would assume there will be some rewrites before shooting. It’s also interesting his use of the word ‘partner’ in the statement. Bear in mind, he is still the star, exec producer, and co-writer of the film, so he should have a fair amount of sway as to who comes on board behind the camera.
WB do apparently a shortlist of directors they would like to use. Matt Reeves, director of Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and the upcoming War for the Planet of the Apes is apparently high on the list, and would an interesting choice. I’m sure more news of possible replacements will leak out in the coming weeks.
We will next see Affleck don the cowl when the Justice League is released on the 17th November 2017.
