USA Network Considering A Suits Spin-Off

It seems we might not have seen the end of Suits‘ Jessica Pearson, as USA Network are apparently in early talks with Gina Torres to revive the character for her own show.

Jessica left her law firm ‘Pearson Specter Litt’ during the season 6 midseason finale, as the character headed off to Chicago for a new start with her on/off boyfriend Jeff Malone (played by fellow Whedon alumnus D.B. Woodside.)

Torres, because of her general amazing awesomeness, has been in high demand since leaving the show. She was cast in the lead for The Death of Eva Sofia Valdez, which didn’t get picked up, then landed a role as Agent Justine Diaz in season 2 of ShondaLand series The Catch. There is no news on exactly what form the new series would take, although Torres’ main stipulation is that it would have to be shot in L.A., as that was the main reason she quit the main show, which is shot in Toronto.

“Gina expressed that due to personal stuff going on in her life she needed to be in L.A. more,” commented Suits showrunner Aaron Korsh about writing Torres out in an interview last year. “We formulated a plan at that point to try and gracefully exit her from the show. She said at the time that if Suits were shot in L.A. she’d be on it forever, and if I had my way she’d be on it forever.”

The one issue with spinning Jessica off into her new show, is that it would probably mean the end of her relationship with Jeff… D.B. Woodside is already tied up on Lucifer, which has been picked up for a 3rd season, so it’s unlikely he could do both. The whole spin-off would have been a non-starter had Korsh’s original idea of having Jessica killed off not been shot down by the network. “In my mind, Jessica was going to make this decision to go off into the sunset with Jeff Malone,” comments Korsh. “And that father Larry Marsden (Colin Glazer), who was a little bit crazy and accosted Rachel and got broken on the stand, was going to bring a gun and go nuts and kill her. I didn’t think we were going to see it; we were going to hear about it. It was going to shatter everyone and we were going to do a two-year time jump afterwards.” However, the network didn’t like the idea, so Korsh switched it, and Jessica got her happy ending.

If things come together, it’s likely that Korsh would write the show, either solo or with another writer, along with exec producing and showrunning.

We’ll keep you up-to-date if we hear more, but in the meantime, you can catch Suits, Sunday nights at 10pm on Dave.
