12 Monkeys Picked Up For A 4th & Final Season

Season 3 of 12 Monkeys has yet to air either side of the Atlantic, but Syfy have confirmed that season 4, due next year, will be it’s last.

Loosely based on Terry Gilliam’s 1995 movie, the show follows time traveler James Cole (Aaron Stanford) who is sent back in time by Katarina Jones (Barbara Sukowa) from the year 2043 to our present day to stop the release of a deadly virus by the enigmatic organisation known as “The Army of the Twelve Monkeys”. He’s joined in this fight by virologist Cassandra Railly (Amanda Schull), his best friend José Ramse (Kirk Acevedo) and Jennifer Goines (Emily Hampshire), the insane daughter of the virus’ creator.

Over the course of the first two seasons, they’ve jumped back and forth between so many timelines, and, well, ‘monkeyed around’ with reality so much at this point, it would be hard to explain where the plot actually is without writing an entire essay! It’s been a tough little show for the network, but really there is only so far you can stretch out the premise, so I think wrapping it at 4 seasons seems sensible.

Interestingly, in the US, the plan is to air season 3 over the course of 3 nights on Syfy, with Chris McCumber, President of Ent at NBCUniversal saying that the “time-twisting themes and edge-of-your-seat storyline, 12 Monkeys is the perfect show to air this way.” He continues “It’s grown into a world well beyond the original film, and after seeing the creative strength of Season 3, we couldn’t wait to pick it up for a fourth season.”

No news on how it’ll air in the UK yet, but we’re expecting 12 Monkeys to arrive soon after the US airing on Syfy UK.
