Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger is the latest show to arrive from comic book giants rich history, this one landing on Disney’s Freeform channel in the US.

Cloak & Dagger is a far more serious affair than New Warriors, their other upcoming Marvel show. It follows the story of Tandy Bowen (Olivia Holt) and Tyrone Johnson (Aubrey Joseph), 2 teenagers from very different backgrounds, who find themselves burdened and awakened to newly acquired superpowers while falling in love.

Tandy can emit light daggers and Tyrone has the ability to engulf others in darkness. They quickly learn they are better together than apart, but their feelings for each other make their already complicated world even more challenging.

Watching most of the trailer, you wouldn’t think there is any superhero stuff going on at all, which is an interesting approach. It’s all about the teen angst. Surprisingly, this is Marvel’s first foray into out-and-out young adult drama. The Netflix/Marvel shows are firmly aimed at older comic book fans, whilst Agents Of Shield and the sadly departed Agent Carter both cast a wider net. As you can see from the trailer, Cloak & Dagger is going head on at Freeform’s teen audience.

There also seem to be some major changes in origin from the source material. In the books the couple are runaways who meet and become friends when Ty saves Tandy’s purse from a mugger. They gain their powers after surviving experimentation by a criminal chemist, who preyed on the lost & forgotten of NYC.

The TV version seems to be leaning towards a more mystical destiny for their abilities – Ty saves Tandy from a car accident when they’re kids, but it’s not until they randomly bump into each other in later life that their powers manifest. I don’t think this is a huge issue, and I can see why Freeform would maybe want to stay away from the whole ‘mad chemist’ idea!

Co-starring in the show are J.D. Evermore (The Walking Dead, Rectify), Carl Lundstedt (Conviction, Grey’s Anatomy), Andrea Roth (Blue Bloods, Ringer, Rescue Me), Gloria Reuben (Mr. Robot, Falling Skies, ER), Miles Mussenden (Bloodline, Secrets and Lies, Stranger Things), and James Saito (Eli Stone, House of Cards, Bull).

No news on a UK air date for Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger yet, but we’ll let you know when we hear something.
