It was only a matter of time before the big guns showed up in Supergirl. After last years casting of Superman, now they are set to bring in a major villain of his, General Zod, who will be played by Canadian actor Mark Gibbon.
Whilst you might might not know Mark’s name or be able to place his face, if you’ve watched any comic book or scifi in the last 20yrs, the chances are you’ve seen him in something. Mark has appeared in The 100, Falling Skies, Once Upon a Time, Man of Steel, Continuum, Smallville, The 4400, Stargate: Atlantis, Stargate SG-1 and even popped up on Arrow (although obviously not as Zod!)
This is of course, not the first time we’ve seen Zod on screen. Michael Shannon took on the role in the latest big screen Superman outings, with Terence Stamp playing him in the Christopher Reeve days. The character also popped up in Smallville played by Callum Blue, along with having appeared in various animated features.
General Zod is traditionally played as a high ranking Kryptonian military leader with a hatred of all things non-Kryptonian, who was trapped inside the Phantom Zone, usually for attempting to start a war or rebellion. It’s not entirely clear how or when Zod will be added to Supergirl’s world, or if it will bring Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman back onto the show.
Supergirl is currently on a break in the US, but will return to Sky 1 in the UK at 8pm on the 2nd May 2017.
