Eliza Dushku Leads TV Adaptation Of Glen Cook’s ‘The Black Company’

Buffy alumna Eliza Dushku is heading back to TV in an Adaptation Of Glen Cook’s ‘The Black Company‘ fantasy novels it has been announced today.

Dushku’s own production company, Boston Diva Productions optioned the rights to the fantasy series which includes all 10 published books, and the upcoming 11th novel ‘Port of Shadows’, due to land next year. The show is being developed by IM Global Television, with David Goyer’s Phantom Four also producing.

The books combine epic and dark fantasy elements and follow an elite mercenary unit called the ‘Black Company’, who sell their ‘services’ across the Tolkien-esque landscape to the highest bidder. They find themselves employed by the Lady (who will be played by Dushku), a mysterious dark sorceress who rules over the Northern Empire. When the hard-bitten mercenary discover a prophecy that the embodiment of good has been reborn, they must re-examine their loyalties.

“Glen Cook’s books turn the traditional fantasy adventure tropes on their ear with wry, dimensional characters and a modern sensibility,” commented IM Global Television President Mark Stern. Dushku adds “The Black Company is vast in scope yet remains fundamentally relevant through the morally ambiguous choices it presents at every turn. We are excited to bring Glen Cook’s classic story to life with Mark and David, luminaries in the cinematic pursuit of science fiction and epic fantasy, who will inevitably assemble poignant characters embroiled in jaw-dropping action.”

It’s an interesting concept for a tv show, and has an experienced team behind it. Dushku is of course best known for her role as Faith in Buffy, along with playing Echo in Dollhouse, starring in Tru Calling and, most recently, playing Veronica in Banshee. She has also just signed on for a recurring role on Bull, with the option to be upped to series regular for season 2. It’s not clear if her part in The Black Company may prevent her from doing that.

David Goyer is the veteran behind Da Vinci’s Demons, Constantine, Flashforward, Blade, and the upcoming Krypton series, as well as being the writer of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Batman Begins and the upcoming Green Lantern Corps movie. Mark Stern was head of original programming at Syfy, and shepherded in shows such as Battlestar Galactica, Warehouse 13, Eureka, Being Human, Defiance, Alphas, and Stargate: Atlantis.

No news on a network pick up yet, but this is one we will be keeping an eye on.
