L to R – Kenneth Mitchell, Clare McConnell, Shazad Latif, Rekha Sharma, Damon Runyan

Things are getting a little more crowded aboard the USS Discovery, as Star Trek: Discovery adds 5 new cast members who are going to explore the final frontier.

Shazad Latif technically has already been announced as playing a Klingon Commander Kol, but is now shifting characters (and allegiances), to play Lieutenant Tyler, a Starfleet officer in the Federation. His most prominent roles to date have been in Spooks, where he played tech wizard Tariq, and in Penny Dreadful, where he portrayed Dr. Henry Jekyll.

The now vacant role of Kol, a commanding officer in the Klingon Empire, has gone to Kenneth Mitchell, who you may recognise from Frequency, where he played Deacon Joe Hurley, or The Astronaut Wives Club where he played Deke. He is also well known for portraying Eric in the cult hit Jericho.

Rekha Sharma is set to play Commander Landry, the Discovery’s security officer. Sharma is no stranger to scifi, having starred as Tory Foster, one of the Final Five, in Battlestar Galactica, FBI Agent Sarita Malik in V, Mount Weather Chief Medical Officer Dr. Lorelei Tsing in The 100, and Dr. Harden in Smallville.

Damon Runyan has been cast as cast as Ujilli, a leader in the Klingon Empire. Again, he’s an actor who’s popped up in a number of genre shows, including Smallville, Supernatural, Lost Girl and Haven. Damon is probably best know for his roles as Charles Falco in Gangland Undercover, and Coach Carson in Degrassi: The Next Generation.

Finally we have newcomer Clare McConnell, who takes on the role of Dennas, a leader in the Klingon Empire. Her film credits include Dim the Fluorescents, which is due out in the Autumn.

They will join the cast which is lead by The Walking Dead’s Sonequa Martin-Green as Discovery’s First Officer (aka Number One), the intriguingly named Michael Burnham… Other cast includes Jason Isaacs as Discovery’s Captain Lorca, Michelle Yeoh as Georgiou – Captain of the a ship called the Shenzhou, James Frain as Spock’s father Sarek, and ‘man of many faces’ Doug Jones who is playing Discovery Science Officer Saru.

Star Trek: Discovery is due to land on Netflix UK later in the year.
