With all the comic book movies floating around at the moment, it was somewhat inevitable that Hellboy would make a reappearance at some point. Now, according to Hellboy’s creator Mike Mignola, a new R-Rated film is in the works, with a new star and new director.

Mignola made the announcement on his Facebook page last night, saying “Okay, here’s some news – There IS going to be another HELLBOY MOVIE. It’s going to be an R rated reboot directed by Neil Marshall (The Descent, Game Of Thrones) and starring David Harbour (Stranger Things) as Hellboy. More news to come soon…”

For those of you out of the loop on Hellboy, he was created in 1993 by Mignola, and is a demon who was summoned to Earth by Nazi occultists. Found by Professor Trevor Bruttenholm, he was raised as a normal child, despite his appearance of bright red skin and horns (which he files down). He grows up to works at the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, which was formed by the professor, to battle the forces of darkness.

David Harbour has starring in a number of projects including Aaron Sorkin’s brilliant ‘The Newsroom’, ‘State of Affairs’, ‘Manhattan’ and most recently as Chief of Hawkins Police Department, Jim Hopper, in the critically acclaimed ‘Stranger Things’. Whilst he might not have the build of previous Hellboy Ron Perlman, he’s a great actor and an interesting pick for the role.

Neil Marshall is the director of movies such as The Descent and Centurion, and is a much sought after director in the tv world too. He’s shot episodes of Black Sails, Constantine, Hannibal, Westworld, and was nominated for an Emmy for his work on Game of Thrones.

The working title for the new film is Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen, and it will not have any involvement from Ron Perlman, or director Guillermo del Toro, who brought Hellboy to life twice before on the cinema screen. There has been some rumbling about del Toro directing a third movie, but apparently they could agree on a large enough budget for him to bring his vision to life.

Whilst I’m aware this news isn’t going to sit well with fans of the first two Hellboy movies, I do think Neil Marshall is an interesting and safe pair of hand for the franchise. It’s hard to imagine anyone other than Perlman in the title role, as he seemed so perfectly cast. However, Harbour is a good actor, so I’m prepared to keep my mind open, and see what he does with the part.

It would appear discussions are still ongoing about Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen, but we will let you know when we hear more.
