Adult Swim: Aqua Teen Hunger Force & Birdman Reviews
On December 7th, Revolver Entertainment delves into a world of superheroes, spies and Machiavellian villains as they release the first ever UK box sets for Aqua Teen Hunger Force & Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law.
The Aqua Teen Hunger Force
Matt Maiellaro & Dave Willis’s world of the Aqua Teen Hunger Force it has to be said, is a someone surreal one… Aqua Teen Hunger Force consists of Frylock – a floating packet of fries, who is the brains and rationality of the group, Master Shake – a sadistic, lazy milkshake who loves to torture the force’s 3rd member, Meatwad – a gentle mutant meatball. The 3 live together in New Jersey next door to the wife-beater-wearing Carl, who spends most of his time indulging in sport, rock music, booze and women.
Each week the trio get into a variety of adventures, ranging from Meatwad and Shake being eaten by a pet snake, to having their cable tv stolen by aliens using a *ahem* Fargate (not at all like the ‘gate’ in the popular scifi movie, or tv franchise of the same name), to Shake and Carl splitting the cost of buying a a mail-order bride from Chechnya… Fair to say it’s not your traditional cartoon show! Weird, funny, and very very surreal.
Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law
How to describe Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law… Imagine you’d stepped into a parallel dimension, where some of those characters from the Saturday morning cartoons you watched as a kid had gone out and got real jobs. The star, Harvey Birdman (of 70s Hanna-Barbera cartoon Birdman and the Galaxy Trio) is now working as a third-rate lawyer at an upscale law firm. It’s not clear whether Harvey ever went to law school, but he definitely knows the lingo and has a nice suit – even if he still insists on wearing his superhero get-up underneath.
What I find so amaxing about Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law is they are using the genuine characters from those 60s/70s Hanna-Barbera cartoons. Whether it’s defending Secret Squirrel after he’s arrested for indecent exposure (everytime he opens his raincoat to use a ’special gadget’ he’s accused of flashing), or defending against a lawsuit from The Jetsons, who have come back from the future (2002…) to sue the people of earth for destroying the environment. Other highlights for Harvey Birdman – defender of ‘toons in trouble’ include keeping Shaggy and Scooby-Doo out of jail for possession, representing Fred Flintstone over alleged Mafia connections, and lead the trial of Yogi Bear’s sidekick Boo-Boo who is suspected of being notorious eco-terrorist: ‘The Unabooboo’.
I really enjoyed Harvey Birdman. It’s a great show with some laugh out loud moments, particularly for anyone old enough to remember the original cartoons.
The DVD box sets contain 90 episodes, and over 7 hours of extras with music videos, never-before-seen footage and deleted scenes, as well as show commentaries by the cast & crew.
On December 7th Adult Swim also make available to fans the DVDs of the second seasons of Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law.
DOOM, who have collaborated with Aqua Teen Hunger Force and has provided music for them in the past are offering you a free a DOOM track to Download – ‘GAZZILLION-EAR’ EP, the remix EP following DOOM’s album BORN.
Exclusive Pics from The Descent: Part 2
Just been sent a couple of exclusive pics of survivor ‘Juno’ (Natalie Mendoza) from The Descent: Part 2, the chilling sequel to the critically acclaimed and globally successful horror hit The Descent.
Dazed, bloodied and speechless with trauma, Sarah Carter (SHAUNA MACDONALD) emerges alone from the Appalachian cave system where the events of The Descent took place. Local Sheriff Redmond Vaines forces her back underground to help the rescue team which is desperately searching for her five missing girlfriends.
As the team move deeper into the caves, Sarah’s flashes of fractured memory intensify and she begins to realise the full horror of the would-be rescue mission. Only Sarah knows the terror which lurks in the shadows of the caves. But they are about to encounter a new tribe of Crawlers, inbred, deformed and even more viciously feral than those Sarah faced before.

Dollhouse Closing It’s Doors

Dollhouse Cancelled
Yes, the rumours are true… Fox has decided to cancel Dollhouse after the 13 episodes of season 2 finish airing in Jan. It’s a real shame as it’s growing into a great series, but not unexpected. The rating for season 1 weren’t great, and I rather think the only reason Dollhouse got it’s 2nd season was because no Fox exec was willing to risk the wrath of Whedon fans still bitter about the whole Firefly debarcle.
Joss posted these comments on whedonesque about Dollhouse’s cancellation:
“I don’t have a lot to say. I’m extremely proud of the people I’ve worked with: my star, my staff, my cast, my crew. I feel the show is getting better pretty much every week, and I think you’ll agree in the coming months. I’m grateful that we got to put it on, and then come back and put it on again.
I’m off to pursue internet ventures/binge drinking. Possibly that relaxation thing I’ve read so much about. By the time the last episode airs, you’ll know what my next project is. But for now there’s a lot of work still to be done, and disappointment to bear.
Thank you all for your support, your patience, your excellent adverts. See you again. -j.”
Message to Joss - Looking for something to do? You could always start talks with the BBC about Ripper again you know!

Dr. Horrible Intercepts the Emmys
Meant to post this last week and forgot. But for those of you that haven’t already seen it – Dr. Horrible Intercepts the Emmys…
The Devil Joins the Dollhouse?
Entertainment Weekly are saying that Ray Wise (Satan in the sadly canned Reaper), has picked up a reccuring role on Joss Whedon’s Dollhouse. No news as to who he’ll play, but I am thinking he’d make a great Dollhouse boss… He should feel pretty at home, as Reaper’s creators, Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters, have also joined the Dollhouse writing staff.
It seems Dollhouse has taken over from Stargate as the repository for people from finished scifi/fantasy shows. Dollhouse season 2 also sees:
- Joss reteaming with Summer Glau (Firefly & Sarah Connor Chronicles)
- Joss, Eliza & Amy reteaming with Alexis Denisof (Wesley from Buffy/Angel and Mr. Alyson Hannigan
). - Tahmoh Penikett reteaming with Jamie Bamber (Apollo in Battlestar Galactica) and Michael Hogan (Sol in Battlestar Galactica).
Keith Carradine (Detective Lundy in the brilliant Dexter) also makes a guest appearance.
Dollhouse Season 2 UK airdate is 10pm on Tuesday, 20th October 2009 on the Sci-Fi Channel - Sky 129.
