Torchwood is Back!

Gwen and Captain Jack

With all the new faces on Doctor Who it was never entirely clear what would happen with it’s spin off show, Torchwood. However, the Beeb have announced today that Torchwood will be back, and it’s gonna be bigger then ever!

Dispite handing over the reins of Who to Stephen Moffat, Russell T Davies has retained his head writer/show-runner status on Torchwood, heading up a team of writers for the new series. One major change this time though is that the show won’t all be coming from Wales. Plans are afoot to give the show a more global look, with filming scheduled to take place in the US, and other locations around the world. John Barrowman and Eve Myles will be back as Captain Jack and Gwen, along with a new set of Torchwood recruits.

The new 10-episode series will be a co-production between BBC Cymru Wales, BBC Worldwide and US network ‘Starz Entertainment.’

Doctor Who Adventure Games!

Control The Doctor

I’ve always wondered why we’ve never had a decent Doctor Who game before, and now the BBC have taken the time to create, not just 1 game, but 4!

Being released for free from the BBC website in June, you’ll be able to guide The Doctor (in new Matt Smith guise) and lovely assistant Amy Pond through 4 Doctor Who based adventure games. All the voice over work is being provided by the original actors, the music provided by Who composer Murray Gold, the stories written by Who writers Phil Ford & James Moran, and the whole thing overseen by Who head-honcho, Steven Moffat. It’s all genuine Who.

Who Exec Producer Piers Wenger is quoted as saying  “There aren’t 13 episodes of Doctor Who this year, there are 17 – four of which are interactive. Everything you see and experience within the game is part of the Doctor Who universe: we’ll be taking you to places you’ve only ever dreamed about seeing – including locations impossible to create on television.”

The Doctor and Amy

And the games aren’t some cheap, dodgy, browser based affair, but full blown, downloadable adventures. Development of which has all been controlled by game guru Charles Cecil – the man behind classic adventure games such as ‘Beneath a Steel Sky‘ and the ‘Broken Sword‘ series.

If your hoping for the games to appear on consoles, sorry to say, don’t hold your breath. They’ll only be available on PC and Mac because console releases would result in the BBC having to fork out for Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo licensing, which understandably, they won’t do.

So, free Doctor Who PC games, from the BBC, developed under the watchful eye of a adventure gaming giant? That can’t be a bad thing!

Doctor Who, Eleventh Doctor, Series 1 - BBC1 – 3rd April 2010 (13 episodes)
I’ve given up trying with Series numbers on Who. It’s Series Five of new Who, but DW Mag are referring to it as Series One… Although if your proper old school, it’s also series 31… ;)

Ashes To Ashes, Series 3 - BBC1 – Friday 2nd April at 9pm, 2010.
Last series of Ashes to Ashes, promising to answer questions and round off the Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes story (8 episodes).

Castle, Season 1 - Alibi (sky 132, virgin 130) – Wednesday 7th April at 9pm, 2010.
Ladies, get your Captain Tightpants fix, as
‘Castle’ reaches the UK! Nathan Fillion (Desperate Housewives, Firefly, Serenity) stars as Richard Castle – a famous mystery novelist who helps the NYPD homicide department solve crimes.

Smallville, Season 9 – E4 – Best guess at the moment is ‘when E4 can be bothered…’ (usually around May 2010 if they’re true to form)… and they have the gall to complain about people downloading episodes, when it started airing in the US in Sept 09! UPDATE: Latest word from E4 is ‘sometime next month (JUNE 2010)’ after it finishes airing in the US on 14 May 2010… UPDATE 2: Latest rumour is June 1st 2010 for Smallville, Season 9‘s return to British TV!
Trying not to go off on another major rant about E4 and their ridiculous scheduling policies…

Dexter, Season 4 – FX – Friday August 27th 2010 at 10pm

As we wave a sad farewell to David Tennant after this evening’s Doctor Who ‘End of Time – Part 2′, we say hello to the eleventh Doctor – Matt Smith. The BBC have just released this frankly awesome looking trailer for Matt’s first outing, due Spring 2010! Much as i’m sorry to see David go, i’m looking forward to Who taking a new direction with its new lead and new show runner in Steven Moffat. I’ll reserve proper judgement till i see series 5 of Doctor Who in full, but looking at this, i think we’re in safe hands!
