Robot Chicken Star Wars 1 and 2 Boxset

Robot Chicken Star Wars 1 & 2 Boxset

In readiness for Christmas, HMV has got an exclusive box set of Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episodes 1&2. For those of you yet to discover Robot Chicken, it’s a twisted, pop culture referencing, stop motion animated television series, created and executive produced by Seth Green (Oz from Buffy, and voice of Chris on Family Guy) and Matthew Senreich.

The show parodies a large array of your childhood tv shows, from Thundercats to He-Man, through GI Joe and The Smurf. But the arena where they really shine is when they show their out and out geek-cred in the Star Wars parodies. Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episodes 1&2 are like the twisted dream of a feverish Star Ward geek who’s taken too much cold medicine, with all the subtlety of a diarrhea-suffering Wookie pounding on your bathroom door.

One of the things that really comes across in Seth and Matt’s parodies, despite the massive amount of fun they poke at the franchise, is that they are huge Star Wars fans. From Vader having to call the Emperor (voiced by Family Guy creator Seth Macfarlane) to explain that the Death Star’s been blow up, to the advert for Max Rebo’s Greatest Hits (including smashes such as ‘It’s Not Easy Being Blue’ and ‘I Already Told You, Im Not An Elephant’), and Admiral Ackbar Cereal (Your tongues can’t repel flavor of this magnitude!), there is huge geeky affection for the source material. This is also borne out by managing to get many of the original cast (Carrie Fisher, Billy Dee Williams and Ahmed Best to name a few) to voice their characters from the orignial movies. In fact, Lucas himself approved of the parodies so much, that it was anounced earlier this year that he’s working with the Robot Chicken team on an animated Star Wars sitcom!

Although the Robot Chicken: Star Wars episodes themselves aren’t all that long, the DVD’s also include over 4 hours of special features, including: Chicken Nuggets, Animation Meeting, Behind the Scenes, Deleted Scenes, Trailers, Alternate Audio, Production Design, Time Lapse, Photo Gallery, Video Blog, Panel Presentations, Episode Commentary.

The Limited Edition Robot Chicken Star Wars: Episodes I & II set including exclusive artcards, and is available on DVD October 25th, at £9.99 RRP exclusively from HMV.

9/10 – These are the DVDs your looking for.

Robot Chicken is ba-ba-baw-baaack! Season 3 of the toy murderin’, attention’ span shatterin’ TV series comes to DVD on the 25th January 2010.

No cow is too sacred, no star too celestial to escape the Robot Chicken treatment. Created by Seth Green and Matthew Senreich, Robot Chicken Season 3 delivers 20 fifteen?minute episodes of fastly-paced sketches featuring an impressive list of vocal talent from creator Seth Green and an impressive cast of Hollywood names.

In its native USA, Robot Chicken has gone on to become Adult Swim’s highest rated original show, winning an Emmy© for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Animation in 2006 and 2007. It was recently nominated for two more Emmy© awards for the Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode II special.

The People Behind The Poultry

All of this mayhem started over a love of toys. Having worked throughout the comic book industry, Matthew Senreich rose through the ranks at comic bible Wizard to become editor of their Toy Fare publication. While attending the annual Comic Con in San Diego he ran into actor Seth Green (Austin Powers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Family Guy) and a friendship blossomed over their mutual love of action figures. An idea was struck to take a knowing swipe at everything from Star Wars to George Bush by animating their beloved toys – every man’s dream right? But where did the obscure title come from? Seth Green explains, “Um, “Robot Chicken” was a dish from the Chinese restaurant where we ordered take?out.”

Robot Chicken, Season 3

Highlights from Robot Chicken Season 3 include Sarah Michelle Geller pedaling a Japanese yeast infection cream; Albert Einstein and his wife have couple’s therapy and Governor Schwarzenegger investigates the illegal immigration issue with Speedy Gonzales and Dora the Explorer.

Special features

Chicken Nuggets – Gag Reel – VFX Comparison – Alternate Audio – Deleted Animatics – Deleted Scenes – Studio tour – Video blogs – Commentary on all 20 Episodes

Robot Chicken Season 2

Over the weekend (in-between PS3 gaming sessions and a House marathon running on tv) I had a chance to preview a bunch of episodes from season 2 of Seth Green‘s manic stop motion sketch show  - Robot Chicken.

Due out on DVD in the UK on 28th September 2009, Robot Chicken’s 2nd season continues the insane, funny, and it some places just plain wrong (but in a good way), humour of Seth Green and his ever expanding cast of voices. Along with series regulars such as Seth MacFarlane & Alex Borstein (from Seth’s other gig – Family Guy) or Sarah Michelle Gellar (Buffy), you also get a quite unbelievable number of guest vocal talent. It never ceases to amaze me how they manage to get people to parody themselves. You see a sketch in the show featuring a Playmobil Hugh Heffner in a Playmobil Playboy Mansion, or David Hasselhoff in Andrew Lloyd Weber’s Beastmaster : The Musical, only to watch the end credits to find that it actually was Heff and the Hoff.

As usual sketches range from the genuis 5 second 1 liners, to full 5min routines, with jokes ranging from high, to very low brow, but ultimately always still funny. The only place the show struggles a bit has nothing to do with it’s quality, but is some of cultural references. A couple of sketches reference US shows or toys may not translate immediately over to a UK audience, they should however still make you laugh.

Robot Chicken Season 2 is weird, funny, and at times wildly inappropriate (I particularly enjoyed Jesus and the Argonauts and Lil’ Hitler sketches), but if you like off the wall humour, it’s well worth the purchase.

8/10 – Insane, inappropriate, and extremely funny.
