Ewan McGregor Joins ‘Birds Of Prey’ Movie As Black Mask
It’s a surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one… Ewan McGregor says “hello there” to DC’s upcoming ‘Birds Of Prey’ movie as he joins the cast as Roman Sionis, otherwise known as Gotham City mob boss, Black Mask.
‘Birds Of Prey’ will see Margot Robbie reprise her role as Harley Quinn, along with Mary Elizabeth Winstead (‘Fargo’, ’10 Cloverfield Lane’) as Huntress and Jurnee Smollett-Bell (‘Underground’, ‘True Blood’) as Black Canary. Rosie Perez (‘Bounty Hunters’, ‘White Men Can’t Jump’) also joins the cast as GCPD Detective Renee Montoya.
For those of you that don’t know Black Mask, he has a rather interesting backstory in the comic books. Roman Sionis was born to a wealthy but uncaring, self-absorbed parents, who cared more about their social status than their own son. They would mingle with other prominent Gotham families, including the Waynes, despite their utter disdain for other members of the socialite classes. The utter hypocrisy of the social “masks” worn by his parents led the young Roman to a lifelong obsession with physical masks.
As a young adult, when Roman fell in love, his parents forced him to break it off as they felt his chosen partner didn’t have the right social standing for their family. Roman finally snaps and ends up burning down the family mansion, killing his parents and inheriting the family cosmetic business and wealth. Unfortunately, Roman didn’t have his father’s head for business, and when a line of cosmetics ends up disfiguring women due to a lack of testing, it brings the business to its knees. Bruce Wayne offers to bail out the business, on the condition he steps down and Bruce takes control. This leads to an angry and humiliated Roman breaking into his parent’s tomb, smashing his father’s ebony casket, and carving out an ebony mask from the remains, declaring himself reborn as Black Mask. Using the Sionis crypt as a base, Roman forms the False Face Society, a group of masked criminals who terrorise Gotham.
‘Birds Of Prey’ sees Ewan McGregor reunited on screen with Mary Elizabeth Winstead who previously starred together in ‘Fargo’ Season 3. They then started dating, following McGregor’s estrangement from his wife. He’s well known for a multitude of roles including the recent ‘Christopher Robin’ movie, and of course, playing Obi-Wan Kenobi in the ‘Star Wars’ films.
‘Birds Of Prey’, which will be directed by Cathy Yan, is due to arrive in cinemas February 2020.
