Australian TV shows that have been successful in the UK

The UK and Australia have always had close ties. The two countries are very similar in culture, particularly when it comes to their taste in food and a sarcastic sense of humour. It is, therefore, not uncommon to see Brits visiting Down Under for holidays, even despite having to obtain a travel visa Australia. It also comes as no surprise that many of the Australian TV shows become popular in the UK and vice versa. So, let’s have a look at some of the best examples of such shows!

Summer Heights High

“Summer Heights High” is a mockumentary-style comedy series created by and starring the multi-talented Chris Lilley. Set in an Australian high school, the show follows three distinct characters, all played by Lilley: the hilarious drama teacher Mr. G, the spoilt exchange student Ja’mie, and the rebellious Tongan student Jonah. The show’s satirical take on high school life resonated with the UK audiences and its iconic catchphrases even made their way into the British schools, which is why the show was such a hit in the local TV.

Neighbours

Perhaps one of the most iconic Australian exports, “Neighbours” has been a staple of UK television since 1985. This long-running soap opera, set in the fictional Melbourne suburb of Erinsborough, has given viewers a daily dose of drama, romance, and the occasional scandal. Stars like Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, and Margot Robbie got their start on “Neighbours”, and its catchy theme song is known by many Brits. The show has consistently drawn a dedicated viewership, making it one of the most successful Australian series in the UK.

Home and Away

Another soap opera that has found a home in the hearts of the British public is “Home and Away”. Taking place in the fictional coastal town of Summer Bay, the show has a beautiful setting of sun and sea, further tempting the viewers to go on visagov.com and book themselves a holiday to Australia! Since its UK debut in 1989, “Home and Away” has been a popular show to this day, with many Brits still tuning in to catch up on the latest drama and romance in Summer Bay.

The Tourist

First airing as recently as 2022, the thrilling drama series “The Tourist” is already a staple in the British television. Its main character, played by Jamie Dornan, is a British man who finds himself waking up in the Australian Outback with no memory of who he is or how he got there. As he tries to piece together his identity, he gets involved in a web of conspiracy and danger. The gripping plot, combined with the breathtaking landscaped of Australian nature, made “The Tourist” a must-watch for UK viewers.

Married at First Sight, Australia

Although originates in Denmark, the Australian spin-off of “Married at First Sight” has been as big of a hit as the UK version. The reality TV show follows a series of couples who meet for the first time at the altar, getting married. The outcomes of such a controversial decision often led to a lot of entertaining drama, however, the viewers are rooting for the couples to find true love. Since the show is already popular in the UK, it’s no surprise that the Australian “Married at First Sight” has become a sensation amongst the British viewers, too!

Final word

The cultural ties between the UK and Australia are evident, particularly in the shared appreciation for TV shows. From soaps to reality, many of the iconic Australian series have found a loyal audience not only locally, but also amongst the Brits.
