With Twilight on the big screen and the brilliant True Blood on the small, vampires are big business again. So much so, that Bloody Disgusting is reporting that Universal Pictures are planning to take another bite of Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles.
The Vampire Chronicles have made it onto the screen twice before. Firstly with Tom Cruise defying expetation and being superb as Lestat, against Brad Pitt‘s equally brilliant (and extremely whiney) Louis, in Interview with the Vampire (1994). Then Stuart Townsend took over from Cruise in 2002’s rather less successful Queen of the Damned.
For Lestat‘s 3rd big screen outing, if the rumours are true, Universal has set their sights on Robert Downey Jr to fill the blond wig and vamp fangs. However, they’ve yet to decide on which book they’d like to adapt.
Personally i’m not sure i can see Robert Downey Jr as Lestat… But then no one (including Anne Rice, for which she later apologised) could imagine Tom Cruise as Lestat, and he turned in the best performance in the whole movie. I’m a huge fan of Downey Jr’s so it’ll be interesting to see if this develops into something, or gets staked through the heart…
