CBS Announce ‘Hawaii Five-0’ Will End With Current 10th Season

The current 10th Season of Hawaii Five-0 will be its last CBS has today announced.

After 10 years and 240 episodes, the daddy of the CBS “proceduralverse” will bow out with a 2-hour finale, which will air in April on the US network (a little later on Sky One for those of us in the UK). ‘Hawaii Five-O’ is a contemporary take on the classic series about an elite federalized task force whose mission is to wipe out the crime that washes up on the islands’ sun-drenched beaches. Alex O’Loughlin, Scott Caan, Meaghan Rath, Dennis Chun, Ian Anthony Dale, and Chi McBride star.

“It’s never easy to say goodbye to a hit franchise that carried on the legacy of the original with such distinction while establishing its own signature style,” commented Kelly Kahl, President, CBS Entertainment. “From episode one, Hawaii Five-0 has been a huge success for us. Thanks to the amazing talents of the producers, writers, cast and crew, it has played a key role for a decade on our schedule and helped establish our powerhouse Friday night. We cannot be prouder of its quality, longevity and are thankful for the passionate fan-devotion it inspired.”

It seems that old back injury star Alex O’Loughlin received in the early seasons of the show has finally caught up with him. There were rumours he was leaving the show a couple of seasons back, but after some specialist treatment, he felt okay to carry on, although it has apparently still been causing him issues. This time around, he has decided he can no longer continue. Whilst CBS did consider keeping things going with a new lead alongside Scott Caan’s Danny, after discussions with the cast and crew, they decided it would be best to bring things to a close. A 10th Season would also have meant renegotiating contracts with the stars, so now would seem a good place to stop.

“This show has been pretty much every waking moment for the last 10 years of my life,” added O’Loughlin. “Everywhere I go on this planet, in every language, I am McGarrett to all these people. What we’ve done, what we’ve accomplished, it’s extraordinary. I can’t really put words to express my level of gratitude. I’m just glad to have been a part of this, a part of history and I’m going to miss it. And to the fans, I don’t know how to thank you guys. Thank you for following us the way you have. I’m going to miss you. Aloha.”

Since launching the reboot 10 years ago, producers Peter M. Lenkov, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci have built their own little universe on CBS, with ‘MacGyver’, ‘Magnum PI’ and ‘NCIS: LA’ all crossing over at one point or another. Ratings wise, it has been extremely consistent for the network, generating solid viewing figures, and a lot of online engagement via social media.

“Hawaii Five-0 has been such a blessing to me and all of the people who have worked on this incredible show,” said showrunner Peter M. Lenkov. “I truly learned the meaning of ‘ohana’ as the viewers embraced us and the people of Hawaii welcomed us with the privilege to film on their shores. I am forever indebted to the creative genius that was Leonard Freeman who gave us such a beautiful story to begin with. And my eternal gratitude to our cast, led by our hero Alex O’Loughlin, the writers, the production team, our CBS ohana, and most importantly – YOU, the fans, who allowed us to come to work with pride and made our series such a success. Mahalo.”

Hawaii Five-0‘ 10th (and now final) season is currently airing on Sky One in the UK.
