Peter Morgan’s epic royal drama The Crown begins its conclusion this November, as Netflix releases the trailer for Part One of the final season, with Part Two coming in December.

Inspired by real events, this fictional dramatisation tells the story of Queen Elizabeth II and the political and personal events that shaped her reign.

Season 6, Part 1 follows Princess Diana’s (Elizabeth Debicki) story, with the first four episodes seeing The Windsors face a reckoning, as Diana, who is no longer a member of the royal family, continues to captivate the public in the weeks before her tragic death. It opens where the Season 5 finale ended, with Diana heading to the south of France to spend the summer holidays with her two sons at the invitation of Mohamed al-Fayed. We also see a glimpse of the show re-creating one of the most famous photographs of Diana sitting alone on the edge of the diving board of the yacht.

“There was just something about that swimsuit and re-creating that moment that felt very sacred and important,” commented Debicki in an interview (recorded prior to the current actor’s strike). “In a way, it reminded me a little bit of when we shot the revenge dress [in Season 5]. It’s as close as possible to the real imagery, and yet what I get to do as an actress is enter into that space and get to discover what’s emotionally in that moment.”

This, of course, will be the final time we see Debicki in the role of Diana in the series. “I really will miss playing this role,” Debicki continues. “There have been so many tumultuous and painful bits of storytelling that I’ve had to do, but also it’s so vivid and there’s so much beauty there and there’s so much love and there’s so much desire to connect to people. It’s not something that you can do in everyday life.”

In part two, which premieres in December, Queen Elizabeth II (Imelda Staunton) reflects on her reign and looks ahead to a time when her successors will take the throne. It also features the wedding of Prince Charles (Dominic West) and Camilla (Olivia Williams), as well as a budding university romance between Prince William and Kate Middleton.

joining the cast for Part 1 are Rufus Kampa and Fflyn Edwards as young Princes William and Harry, respectively. Ed McVey will play the older Prince William, with Luther Ford as the teenage Harry Kate Middleton in Part 2, which also introduces Meg Bellamy as Kate Middleton.

Among the returning cast for the final season are Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret, Claudia Harrison as Princess Anne, Johnathan Pryce as Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Bertie Carvel as Tony Blair, Salim Daw as Mohamed al-Fayed, and Khalid Abdalla as Dodi Fayed.

The Crown‘ Season 6, part one premieres globally on Netflix on Thursday, 16th November 2023 with the first four episodes. Part two premieres Thursday, 14th December 2023 with the final six episodes.
