Steven Knight Developing Birmingham Based University Drama For BBC

According to reports, ‘Peaky Blinders’ creator Steven Knight is in the early stages of developing another new drama for the BBC which would be based around a university in Birmingham.

The currently untitled project would follow a group of young people attending one of the five universities in England’s second-largest city, and would be filmed at Knight’s newly opened Digbeth Loc. Studios in Birmingham. It is being developed as a potential multi-season drama which could run for a number of years, rather than a limited series. Knight would serve as lead writer, bringing in a writer’s room of younger people to develop the show. According to Deadline, who broke the news, the project is still in the very early stages at the moment.

Steven Knight has a huge passion for producing shows set and filmed in the West Midlands, which led to him opening Digbeth Loc. Studios just outside of the city centre. The BBC recently announced a blow to West Midland film production, with the cancellation of the long-running daytime drama ‘Doctors’ after 23 years. However, the BBC has promised that the money from that show will be reinvested in the area.

Knight is a busy man at the moment. He is currently focused on the ’80s music drama This Town, also set in Birmingham and filmed at Digbeth Loc. Studios, with a cast including Michelle Dockery, Levi Brown, Jordan Bolger and Nicholas Pinnock. He’s also writing the script for the ‘Star Wars’ film featuring Daisy Ridley returning to the role of “Rey”;  A remake of the Hitchcock movie ‘Vertigo’ for Paramount; And TV series based around Wliiam Shakespeare’s First Folio, with Sarah Lancashire (Happy Valley). There are also various upcoming projects at different stages of production, such as the 2nd Season of SAS Rogue Heroes; The ‘Peaky Blinders’ movie;  The film biographical ‘Maria’ starring Angelina Jolie as opera singer Maria Callas; FX series ‘The Veil’ starring Elisabeth Moss; And boxing drama A Thousand Blows starring Malachi Kirby and Stephen Graham for Disney+.

This latest project from Steven Knight is in very early development, so might not go anywhere, but we will let you know if we hear more.
