Well this is an interesting move for Disney. They’ve spent $4bn on acquiring Marvel!
“We believe that adding Marvel to Disney’s unique portfolio of brands provides significant opportunities for long-term growth and value creation,” Disney president and chief executive Robert Iger said. “We are pleased to bring this talent and these great assets to Disney.”
Whats interesting though, is what Disney can actually use Marvels assests for, as the film rights of all the big players are pretty well tied up. New Spider-Man movie? Columbia have the rights to his film outings. Fox has Daredevil, Fantastic Four (also getting a reboot according to today’s press) and X-Men. Paramount currently has Iron Man, Thor, Captain America (i still think Nathon Fillion should be cast in this), and all other Avengers related film stuff…
I do wonder if they’re using Marvel to bump up the animation side of Disney, as John Lasseter (animation head honcho of Disney and Pixar), was apparently quite an active part of the acquisition negotiations. It would make sense to use Marvel as a way to reach a young male audience, in the same way they’ve done with things like Hanna Montana to reach a young female demographic. Plus it also means they can leverage the characters in the theme parks, which could produce some very cool rides. Be interesting to see how this all works out.
