You can tell we’re heading toward Sept, as we’re getting a deluge of DVD release dates coming through, so I thought I’d share a few of them. First up…
Alphas, Season 1 – Released on DVD 10th September 2012
Alphas was a great little sci-fi show from writers Zak Penn (The Avengers, The Incredible Hulk, X-Men: The Last Stand) and Michael Karnow about an exceptional group of human beings with enhanced physical abilities caused by anomalies in their genetic make-up and brain structure.
A crack team of super-humans operate within the Defence Criminal Investigation Service of the U.S Department of Defence to investigate a new breed of crime; those committed by and involving other ‘Alphas’. If you missed in on TV, it’s well worth picking up on DVD.
Breaking Bad, Season 4 – Released on DVD/Blu-ray – 1st October 2012
Sony Picture Home Entertainment have now completely given up on the UK tv networks, and have decided to release the mistreated genius that is Breaking Bad direct to DVD.
Chemistry teacher Walter White’s dark transformation to full-blown criminal reaches lethal new heights as his battle of wits with vicious drug kingpin Gus Fring (Giancarlo Esposito – Once Upon a Time) continues… Hopefully that also means Breaking Bad Season 4 will pop up on Netflix in the not too distant future!
SMASH!, Season 1 – Comes to DVD on 29th October 2012
SMASH is somewhat of a guilty pleasure of mine… Developed by Steven Spielberg, it takes a phenomenal musical score by award-winning writing duo Marc Shaiman (Hairspray) and Scott Wittman (Glee) as a backdrop to an entertaining cast of characters as they try to launch the fictional musical ‘Bombshell’ about the life of Marilyn Monroe. Starring American Idol winner Katherine McPhee as the idealistic newcomer ‘Karen’ who’s trying to make it on Broadway, only run into the more established ‘Ivy’ (Megan Hilty – Wicked, Desperate Housewives) who’s not going to let some newcomer take the lead role…
Debra Messing (Will & Grace) & Christian Borle (The Bounty Hunter, Legally Blonde: The Musical) star as writing duo Houston & Levitt, with Jack Davenport (Pirates of the Caribbean, The Talented Mr. Ripley) as unsympathetic director ‘Derek Wills’ and Raza Jaffrey (Harry Brown, Spooks) as Karen’s boyfriend ‘Dev’,and Angelica Houston (The Royal Tenenbaums, The Witches) as tenacious theatre producer ‘Eileen Rand’.
House, Season 8 – The Doctor is in on DVD & Blu-ray 22th October 2012
Proving that all great things must come to an end, David Shore’s masterpiece medical drama sings its bittersweet swan song, as HOUSE SEASON EIGHT checks in on Blu-Ray and DVD on 22 October, courtesy of Universal Playback.
This final season features another star turn from the show’s crowning glory; the masterful Hugh Laurie (Arthur Christmas, Maybe Baby, A Bit of Fry and Laurie) as protagonist Dr Gregory House, joined by series regulars Omar Epps (Alfie, Brother, E.R) as Dr. Eric Foreman, Robert Sean Leonard (Dead Poets Society, Tape, The I Inside) as Dr. James Wilson, Jesse Spencer (Neighbours, Uptown Girls) as Dr. Robert Chase, Peter Jacobsen (Transformers, As Good As It Gets, Law and Order) as Dr. Chris Taub and Olivia Wilde (Tron: Legacy, In Time, Cowboys & Aliens) as Dr. Remy “Thirteen” Hadley.
