It looks like SyFy in the US are dipping their toe in the DC Comic book world, and have ordered a pilot for Krypton, a prequel set on Superman’s home planet.
Taking place two generations before it’s destruction, Krypton follows Superman’s grandfather as he fights to redeem his family’s honor when the House of El is ostracised and shamed, and tries to save his beloved world from chaos.
David S. Goyer is the man behind the production, having worked on Man Of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and developed Constantine, Da Vinci’s Demons and FlashForward. If it goes to series, Sleepy Hollow writer Damian Kindler will serve as showrunner. The pilot will be written by Goyer and Once Upon a Time’s Ian B. Goldberg.
“Krypton is one of the most iconic stories in the comic book universe,” said Bill McGoldrick, Executive Vice President, Scripted Content, NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment. “In the talented hands of David S. Goyer and the DC Entertainment/Warner Horizon Television team, this exciting Syfy project will take viewers back to Superman’s home to show how the timeless legend began.”
As it is only the pilot at this stage, there’s no guarantee it will be picked up, but given the strong brand, and the fashion for superhero shows right now, you have to imagine it stands a good chance.
