When Supergirl makes the transition from CBS to the CW in the US, the network has announced she won’t be the only one with a cape in red, blue and yellow next season. Her cousin Superman will be making an appearance on screen, rather than just via instant messenger!
Up until now, DC has been seemingly being reluctant to let any of the ‘trinity’ (Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman) near the small screen whilst the movies were on-going. But, as we’ve mentioned before on the site and on Geektown Radio, that makes no sense. They have made it clear the TV and movie universes are remaining separate, so why not allow small screen versions of the big three appear?
Henry Cavill of course wears the tights in the cinematic universe, but there have been a number of successful Supermen on the small screen before. Dean Cain, who is already on the show as Kara’s foster dad, Jeremiah Danvers, played the last full version of Superman in the 90’s series Lois & Clark. Tom Welling was the next person to play Clark Kent in 00’s series Smallville, but we never really saw him go full Superman in that. Could this be an opportunity for that oversight to be rectified? We know they the producers like to bring in actors who have some previous history with the universe, so it wouldn’t be out of place to see Welling don the cape when Supes makes his Supergirl debut!
“Greg, Ali and I are beyond thrilled to welcome Clark Kent and his slightly-more-famous alter ego to the world of Supergirl. Superman will be appearing in the first two episodes of the new season and we cannot wait to see who next dons the red cape!” said Supergirl EP Andrew Kreisberg.
Time to start campaigning #wellingforsupergirl.
