As some of you are probably aware, Steven Spielberg is currently in the UK shooting the movie adaptation of Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One.
The Hollywood director chose Birmingham to represent the film’s 2044 dystopian America, however to do that, it requires some additional set dressing, in this case, that takes the form of graffiti art. Thanks to Geektown alumni Chris Brown, we have a number of photos of the artwork which has been popping up around areas of the city in preparation for further filming.
For those of you unfamiliar with the story, it takes place in 2044, where an energy crisis has plunged the world into a major economic downturn. To escape the depression of their daily reality, people have taken to the virtual world of OASIS, a huge MMORPG style virtual society, which is not only used for gaming, but business, trade, and general social interaction. When OASIS’s founder James Halliday (Mark Rylance – Wolf Hall, Bridge of Spies) dies, it launches a competition, which will give whoever wins control over the system, and his personal fortune.
This leads to the rise of ‘gunters’ (Egg-hunters), people who are searching the various themed ‘easter eggs’ the 80’s obsessed Halliday has left spread out across the virtual universe. Wade aka Parzival (Tye Sheridan – X-Men: Apocalypse) is one such ‘gunter’, who becomes famous overnight, when he becomes the first to unlock one of the eggs. Along with his friend Aech, and a rival/love interest Art3mis (Olivia Cooke – Bates Motel), the trio are in a race against time to uncover the rest of the ‘easter eggs’ before the evil Innovative Online Industries, who will stop at nothing to gain control of OASIS…
Below you will find a number of photos from around Birmingham of the graffiti art for Ready Player One, which lands in UK cinemas, 30th March 2018.
