Well this was a nice surprise to wake up to this morning! Kiefer Sutherland’s new show Designated Survivor has popped up on Netflix UK overnight, with new episodes arriving weekly!
Designated Survivor stars Kiefer as Tom Kirkman, the US Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, who is nominated as the ‘Designated Survivor’ (i.e. a member of government kept separate from everyone in case there is a terrible accident) during the State Of The Union address. When an explosion in Washington kills the current President and entire cabinet, Tom is thrust into the top job as Commander In Chief, a position for which he’s woefully under prepared, and it looks like that attack was only the beginning…
Additional cast includes Natascha McElhone (Californication, Solaris, Thorne: Sleepyhead) as Tom’s wife Alex, Adan Canto (Second Chance, The Following, X-Men: Days of Future Past) as White House Deputy Chief of Staff Aaron Shore, Italia Ricci (Supergirl’s Silver Banshee) as Tom’s personal Chief of Staff Emily Rhodes and Maggie Q (Stalker, Nikita) as the FBI agent investigating the bombing. It also sees House’s Kal Penn as Tom’s speechwriter Seth Wright. Penn is no stranger to politics, having leftHouse to take up a role as Obama’s Associate Director in the White House Office of Public Engagement!
