Archer & Adventure Time Both Coming To An End

It’s not a good week to be a cult animated tv show. Announcements arrived that the creators of Archer and the creators of Adventure Time plan to bring their respective series to an end… Although neither of them are doing so immediately.

Archer started off telling the animated story of the International Secret Intelligence Service, and master spy Sterling Archer, a suave but self-centred chap, with a domineering mother (who also happens to be his boss), and ex-girlfriend, who is also a fellow agent. However, things never stay still in the world of Archer, and the writers are happy to completely switch the premise each season. So season 5 turned into a parody of Miami Vice, season 6 went back to the spy format, but then season 7 sees the agency disbanded and them moving to LA to set up a private detective agency!

Archer creator Adam Reed has said that he plans on 3 more shorter seasons of the show (taking it to 10 seasons), with 8 episodes each. Assuming that happens, that means we should have new episodes of Archer until 2019.

Adventure Time has a rather more solid plan, and will come to an end in 2018. For something which was started as a kids show, it grew into a huge cult hit with children and adults alike.

Created by Pendleton Ward, the series follows best friends Finn the Human (Jeremy Shada) and Jake the Dog (John DiMaggio) and their surreal adventures in the magical Land of Ooo. It’s surreal, dark and whimsical comedy won high critical acclaim, picking up multiple awards including 6 Emmys and 2 BAFTAs. “Adventure Time was a passion project for the people on the crew who poured their heart into the art and stories,” commented creator Pendleton Ward. “We tried to put into every episode something genuine and telling from our lives and make a show that was personal to us and that had jokes, too! I’m really happy that it connected with an audience for so long. It’s a special thing, I think.”

Adventure Time will air specials and miniseries and a final 9th season before coming to an end in 2018.

Archer seasons 1 to 7 are available on Netflix UK, and Adventure Time airs on the Cartoon Network in the UK.
