‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Adds Doug Jones & Anthony Rapp To It’s Crew

This news actually broke a while ago, but I completely missed it, so just in case you did as well, Star Trek: Discovery has added the first 2 members to it crew.

You might not recognise Doug Jones’ face, but there’s a very good chance you’ve seen him on screen before. Jones tends to take on roles where he is heavily covered in prosthetics, such as Abe Sapien in the Hellboy movies, Cochise in Falling Skies, The Ancient in The Strain, and the extremely creepy Gentleman in the brilliant Buffy episode ‘Hush’. His role on Star Trek: Discovery sounds like it’ll be similar, as he’s playing Lt. Saru, who is a new Star Trek alien and a Starfleet Science Officer aboard the USS Discovery.

Anthony Rapp is a film, tv and musical theatre actor who you may have seen in episodes of The Knick, and in the films such as RentRoad Trip. He is playing Lt. Stamets, also a Starfleet Science Officer on the USS Discovery, and an astromycologist… Apparently that’s someone that studies “earth-derived fungi in space”. He’ll also be the openly gay character which ex-showrunner Bryan Fuller had mentioned he was adding in, before he had to bow out of the project due to his commitments on American Gods.

Fuller originally stated he would still be involved in the story process, but has since said he’s had to back away entirely, commenting “I’m not involved in production, or postproduction, so I can only give them the material I’ve given them and hope that it is helpful for them. I’m curious to see what they do with it… They have my number and if they need me I will absolutely be there for them.”

A few weeks ago it was announced that Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon star Michelle Yeoh had joined Star Trek: Discovery, we originally thought as the lead. They have since clarified that Yeoh will play Captain Georgiou, who is in charge of the Starship Shenzhou (note ‘starship’ not USS Shenzhou), which will play a “big role” in the first season. So a possible villain maybe?..

We will find out when Star Trek: Discovery materialises on to Netflix UK in May 2017.
