The Originals/TVD Claire Holt Joins ABC’s ‘Doomsday’ Pilot

The Vampire Diaries and The Originals cast member Claire Holt has been added to ABC’s new drama pilot Doomsday it has been announced.

Doomsday is based around the premise that, after the events of 9/11, the U.S. government set up a secret think tank comprising of the most creative minds in science and entertainment, and tasked them with dreaming up man-made disaster scenarios and possible solutions. Because the hypothetical ideas are deemed extremely dangerous, the list is sealed and the program shut down. But when a catastrophe occurs that is ripped from the pages of the missing doomsday book, the team is brought back years later to prevent the disasters of their own making… Side note: This is basically the premise of Batman: War Games, proving once again, comic books have already had all the best ideas. ;)

Claire Holt is well known to fans of TVD and The Originals as Klaus’s long suffering sister Rebekah Mikaelson, but has also appeared recently as Charmain in Aquarius, and Samara in Pretty Little Liars. On the new show, she plays brilliant and hard-edged cyber security analyst Kayla, the latest member to join the Doomsday project.

Other casting already announced includes Brit actor Jack Davenport (Coupling, Smash, Flashforward & Pirates of the Caribbean movies) who plays Warren, a famous action screenwriter, whose creative skills were put to work dreaming up doomsday scenarios for the project; Under the Dome’s Rachelle Lefevre who plays Faye, Deputy Director of Homeland Security who is landed with the task of bringing the Doomsday team back together; Taye Diggs (Empire, Murder in the First) who plays Dr. Davis, another former member of the Doomsday Project, who is now an engineer & architect, but formerly the head of disaster prevention for FEMA; And Dan Byrd (Cougar Town, Heroes), who plays the ‘Nate Silver-like’ Nate Hensley, founder of ‘The New Oracle’, a site that predicts the outcomes of political events, sports and stock trading.

The pilot is written by Mark Bianculli (The Good Neighbor) & VJ Boyd (Justified), and is produced by the CSI franchise’s Carol Mendelsohn. As it’s only a pilot, there’s no guarantee it’ll go to full series… However, ABC won the drama in a very competitive 3-way pitch against other networks, and has offered a financial penalty if they don’t take it to series, so something would have to be extremely wrong for us not to be seeing a full season of Doomsday in the future. We’ll let you know more when we have it.
