It’s taken some lengthy negotiations, but it ‘The Handmaid’s Tale‘ has finally found a UK home on Channel 4 it has been announced.

The 10 part series is adapted from the classic novel by Margaret Atwood, and is set in Gilead, a dystopia totalitarian society in what was formerly the United States. Facing environmental disasters and a plunging birthrate, Gilead is ruled by a twisted fundamentalism in its militarized ‘return to traditional values’.

As one of the few remaining fertile women, Offred (Elisabeth Moss – The West Wing, Mad Men) is a Handmaid in the household of Commander Fred Waterford (Joseph Fiennes – Shakespeare in Love, American Horror Story). She serves as one of the caste of women forced into sexual servitude as a last desperate attempt to repopulate the world. In this terrifying society, Offred must navigate between Commanders, their cruel Wives, domestic Marthas, and her fellow Handmaids – where anyone could be a spy for Gilead – all with one goal: to survive and find the daughter that was taken from her.

The cast also includes Alexis Bledel (Gilmore Girls) as Offred’s Handmaid shopping partner, Ofglen, and Yvonne Strahovski (Chuck, Dexter) as the Commander’s wife Serena.

“The Handmaid’s Tale is a chilling and frighteningly topical exploration of a world where women are subjugated,” commented Jay Hunt, Channel 4’s Chief Creative Officer. “I’m delighted that Channel 4 viewers will get to see this critically-acclaimed take on a classic novel.”

Created and written by Bruce Miller (The 100, A Town Called Eureka)The Handmaid’s Tale will air on Channel 4 from Sunday, 28th May 2017 at 9pm.
