John Wick TV Series In Development Titled ‘The Continental’
Another film franchise is looking to make the leap onto the small screen, as Keanu Reeves’ movie vehicle ‘John Wick’ has a tv series in development.
Titled ‘The Continental’, what makes this a little different to shows like ‘Taken’ or ‘S.W.A.T.’ is it’s not looking to re-cast John Wick, but rather expand his world. The title is a reference to the chain of hotels that serves as neutral ground for various hitmen and assassins.
In a recent interview with Indie Wire, the movie franchise director Chad Stahelski commented “It’s very tied to the film [in that] it’s about the Continentals all over the world, how certain people come into that world, and what happens in relation to those people, which is cool. I think the world is very vast, and everything I’ve heard from it is very positive. […] It’s something that studio seems very, very intent on [making] and very, very behind.”
Lionsgate, who are behind the series are said to be “very excited” about the prospect of expanding the world into tv’s long-form structure, and it’s something Stahelski agrees with. “I like telling stories from my one character’s perspective,” he adds. “Once you put that aside with the TV show, [you can] expand to all the different characters and follow them throughout their journey. You can be with the consigliere, concierge, the sommelier – you can be with all these different characters and walk through the world in different aspects; ones that I’m a little limited [from exploring] by staying with my lead guy.”
It’s a neat idea. It allows them to expand the world without having to mess with the main film franchise, much like they do in shows like ‘Agents Of SHIELD’. That does raise the question of cameos from Reeves himself. “I think he would make an appearance,” comments Stahelski. “I think that’s part of his thing, [But the series] isn’t centred around John Wick.”
