SDCC: MGM Launch Stargate Digital Service & New Series – ‘Stargate Origins’

by Dave Elliott

Much loved sci-fi franchise ‘Stargate’ has been missing from our screens ever since ‘Stargate Universe’ was cruelly cut short back in 2009. Now franchise owners MGM have come up with something new. Not only a new digital platform, totally dedicated to all things Stargate, but a new 10-part series which will debut on the service.

Stargate Command will serve as a hub for the most comprehensive collection of content related to the franchise, which includes ‘Stargate Origins’, a brand new live action series. Created by Mark Ilvedson and Justin Michael Terry, the show will follow Catherine Langford, a character who popped up ‘Stargate: SG1’ a number of times, who is daughter of archaeologist Professor Paul Langford – the man who discovered Earth’s first Stargate in Giza.

Whilst it’s not quite the new series I think a lot of fans were hoping for (such as a proper ending to SGU), it is good to see them pick up the franchise again.

“We’ve been eager to revisit the ‘Stargate’ franchise, and create an all-new story that honours the founding mythos and gives loyal fans more mystery and adventure,” commented Kevin Conroy, president of digital and new platforms at MGM. “We view ‘Stargate Origins’ as a thank you to fans who have been keeping the spirit of the franchise alive for nearly 25 years. With the increasing popularity of digitally native content that can be streamed to any device, MGM is committed to the production of premium linear mid-form content and are proud to launch with ‘Stargate Origins.’”

Stargate Command is going to be a mix of free and paid content, presumably with access to stream the various Stargate TV shows and the original movie, but that is all to be confirmed. “We saw a need for a definitive hub for the ‘Stargate’ fan-base to continue to enjoy news and content, both old and new,” added Chris Ottinger, president of worldwide television distribution and acquisitions at MGM. “Stargate Command will open a new door for the community to celebrate and interact with all content in a way that has never been done before.”
