As I’m sure most of you are aware by now, ‘Star Trek: Discovery‘ launched on Netflix UK this week. The first 2 episodes are available to watch right now, with new episodes arriving every Monday. But for those of you who can’t wait that long, Netflix has put together a little teaser trailer of what’s to come in the rest of the season.
‘Star Trek: Discovery’ follows the voyages of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new lifeforms, and one Starfleet officer who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself.
*SPOILERS* I should say DON’T watch the video above or read further unless you want to be spoiled about the events of the first 2 episodes!
The opening 2 episodes mark an interesting direction for the franchise. Firstly, they are more of a prequel to the actual ‘Star Trek: Discovery’, in that it sets up the first season’s overarching story, and doesn’t actually include the shows titular ship! It does introduce us to Lieutenant Commander Michael Burnham (‘The Walking Dead’s’ Sonequa Martin-Green) though. She’s human but raised by Sarek (James Frain), father of Spock, and the first human to attend the Vulcan Learning Center and Vulcan Science Academy. She’s also partly responsible for starting a war with the Klingons, and as you can see from the trailer above, is brought onboard the USS Discovery by Captain Lorca (Jason Isaacs) to help resolve the conflict she started. That whole “lieutenant commander with caveats” phrase that has been kicking around since Martin-Green was first announced as Burnham now makes a lot more sense!
What is clear from this video is this isn’t your usual Star Trek big, happy, family. Burnham is not trusted or even liked by some of her crewmates, but Lorca believes she can serve some sort of purpose to end the war. What that purpose is, we have yet to find out…
