US network The CW has put into production another DC series, but this time it’s not a Berlantiverse show.

‘Project 13’ comes from ‘Bitten’ creator Daegan Fryklind and centres around Traci Thirteen, a twenty-something forensic scientist and believer in the paranormal who discovers her own hidden extra-sensory abilities when she joins her estranged, sceptic father, Dr Terrance Thirteen, to investigate mysterious cases of the paranormal and unexplained phenomena.

I think it’s fair to say, Traci and Terry Thirteen are relatively obscure DC characters. Created by Joe Kelly and Dwayne Turner they first pop up in a Superman comic in 2003. Traci is a “Homo Magi” – i.e. a human born with an innate ability for magic – but is forbidden to practice by her father due to her mother, sorceress Meihui Lan, being killed by magic. When she moves out on her own, she settles in Metropolis and starts to practice “urban magic” which taps into the knowledge and power of cities.

The character crosses paths with various DC heroes including Batman, Superman, Superboy, and Jaime Reyes, the current incarnation of Blue Beetle, with whom she started a relationship. She spent some time being raised and trained by Ralph Dibny, aka Elongated Man, and his wife Sue, and knows the Teen Titans due to Reyes being a member at the time. She was offered a membership herself but chose not to join, deciding being on a hero team with her boyfriend would complicate things too much.

Fryklind will exec produce along with actress/producer Elizabeth Banks (‘Modern Family’, ‘The LEGO Movie’, ’30 Rock’) and Max Handelman through their company Brownstone Productions, and WBTV.

‘Project 13’ joins CW’s packed lineup of comic book adaptations which includes ‘The Flash’, ‘Arrow’, ‘Supergirl’, ‘Legends Of Tomorrow’, ‘Riverdale’, ‘iZombie’, the upcoming ‘Black Lightning’, and recently announced Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (assuming it goes to series.) DC also has ‘Gotham’ and ‘Lucifer’ on Fox US, and ‘Preacher’ on AMC, with ‘Krypton’ coming to Syfy US, ‘Watchmen’ under development at HBO, and a ‘Titans’ series coming to their own digital service.

Whilst they might not the best known DC characters, ‘Project 13’ could make an interesting addition to the network’s comic book slate. We’ll bring you more news as we get it.
