‘Riverdale’ Team Working On A ‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’ Series
Ever since The CW relaunched their dark take on the work of Archie Comics with ‘Riverdale’, the question of whether ‘Sabrina the Teenage Witch’ would show up has been floated around. Now we have an answer.
Berlanti Productions and WBTV, along with Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa who wrote the ‘Riverdale’ pilot, and Lee Toland Krieger who directed it, have come together again for ‘The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina.’ Don’t expect some bubbly comedy like the Melissa Joan Hart fronted 90’s version. This is based on Aguirre-Sacasa’s 2014 comic book of the same name, that gives a much darker twist to her story.
This dark coming-of-age tale traffics in horror, the occult and, of course, witchcraft, and is described as being in the vein of ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ or ‘The Exorcist.’ Sabrina must wrestle to reconcile her dual nature as a half-witch, half-mortal while fighting the evil forces that threaten her and her family. The show is being viewed as a companion series to ‘Riverdale’ to air at some point in the 2018-19 season (so likely next Autumn). Whether that means it would actually crossover so Sabrina interacts with Archie and the gang remains to be seen.
Aguirre-Sacasa, who is also Chief Creative Officer of Archie Comics, will serve as showrunner and exec produce alongside Krieger and Greg Berlanti.
This would mark the second occult based companion series in development for The CW, who are also working on ‘Wayward Sisters‘ – a spin-off from the hugely popular ‘Supernatural’, that follows Sheriff Jody Mills (Kim Rhodes) and her foster family as they battle the forces of evil.
‘The Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina’ is still in early development, but we’ll let you know when we hear more! In the meantime, ‘Riverdale‘ Season 2 comes to Netflix UK from Thursday, 12 October 2017.
