‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Officially Renewed For Season 2

In news that probably doesn’t come as a huge shock to anyone that’s been watching, Star Trek: Discovery has officially been renewed for Season 2 US network CBS has announced.

The show – which follows Sonequa Martin-Green as Michael Burnham, a wayward Starfleet Officer who finds herself on the USS Discovery as she learns that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself – has been a massive hit for CBS’s All Access digital service in the US. The series broke records for daily, weekly and monthly subscription sign-ups when it launched last month.

“In just six episodes, ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ has driven subscriber growth, critical acclaim and huge global fan interest for the first premium version of this great franchise,” comments Marc DeBevoise, President and Chief Operating Officer, CBS Interactive. “This series has a remarkable creative team and cast who have demonstrated their ability to carry on the ‘Star Trek’ legacy. We are extremely proud of what they’ve accomplished and are thrilled to be bringing fans a second season of this tremendous series.”

The show has done an incredible job of walking the tightrope between not upsetting existing Trek fans, whilst also appealing to new converts, as it pulls the franchise into the modern tv era. Whilst it’s tone is markedly darker than previous versions, it still manages to embrace the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation of dreamers and doers.

Alongside Sonequa Martin-Green the series also stars (hello to) Jason Isaacs, Doug Jones, Anthony Rapp, Shazad Latif, Mary Wiseman, Mary Chieffo, and James Frain.

Star Trek: Discovery airs on Netflix in the UK, airing the day after the US, and is split into 2 halves. The first “chapter” ends on Monday, 13th November 2017, with chapter 2 starting in January 2018. Season 2 is expected to arrive in Autumn 2018, but CBS has yet to announce how many episodes it will be, or if it will be split in the same way.
