And we’re back with another edition of “Hollywood is out of original ideas”. Hulu has put into development a tv anthology series based on Richard Curtis’s smash hit 90’s movie ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ it has been announced.

The series comes from ‘The Mindy Project’ star/creator/producer Mindy Kaling, and, like the film, would follow a group of friends as they navigate their way through, as you’d probably expect, four weddings and a funeral. Each season would follow a different group of people in different locations, although the plan at the moment is to keep the same lead character as continuity. So it’s more an anthology-ish show.

Kaling would exec produce the series with fellow Mindy Project producer Matt Warburton, alongside original movie writer Richard Curtis, with Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner from Working Title who produced the film. Universal Television, where Kaling is based, is producing the series along with MGM Television, who own the rights to the original movie. Kaling and Warburton are currently working on scripts with a view to Hulu giving a straight-to-series greenlight in early 2018.

Whilst there does look to be a look to be a lot of fingers in the ‘Four Weddings…’ pie, this team up does make sense. ‘The Mindy Project’ is currently airing it’s 6th and final season on Hulu in the US, so there is a prior relationship there. MGM previously had huge success working with Hulu on the multi-Emmy winning ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’, so you can see why they would be keen to leverage another one of their properties on the platform. It’s also encouraging to see Curtis involved, even if it is only as exec producer.

We should find out early next year if the ‘Four Weddings and a Funeral’ tv series is a go, but we’ll keep you updated when we find out more.
