Upstart Crow will rack up an impressive set of guest stars when it returns for Season 3 the BBC has announced.

Ben Elton’s “televisual comedie” about the life of William Shakespeare started filming this week and sees David Mitchell (Peep Show) return as the Bard, with guest stars including Kenneth Branagh (Dunkirk) as a mysterious stranger and Lily Cole (St. Trinian’s) as Ephie, who will appear in the Christmas special which airs next December. Other guest appearances sees creator Ben Elton reteam with ‘The Young Ones’ stars Adrian Edmondson and Nigel Planer, along with Montserrat Lombard (Inside No. 9), Beattie Edmondson (Josh), and Ben Miller (Armstrong and Miller).

According to the BBC press release, the new season “Containing turbulent workplace politicks behind the scenes at the first-ever performance of Julius Cæ?ar; a mischievous puckish sprite with a magic love potion who lurketh in the woods around Stratford; prejudice that forestalls Will’s writing of The Merchant of Venice; the world’s first charity fundraising benefit – Inflated Pig’s Bladder Day; a problem with a masked ball and a fake profile; and a Christmas haunting that cometh a little ahead of its time. In amongst these dramas are all manner of transport chaos, divers sinister plots and family arguments, and a quantity of ale and pie…”

Returning regular cast includes Harry Enfield (Harry & Paul) as Will’s father, John Shakespeare; Paula Wilcox (Mount Pleasant) as Will’s mother, Mary; Liza Tarbuck (Linda Green) as Will’s wife Anne; Helen Monks (Raised By Wolves) as their daughter Susanna; Gemma Whelan (Game Of Thrones) as Kate; Rob Rouse (Grownups) as Bottom; Mark Heap (Friday Night Dinner) as Will’s nemesis Robert Greene; Dominic Coleman (Peaky Blinders) as Condell; Steve Speirs (Big School) as Burbage; Jocelyn Jee Esien (Little Miss Jocelyn) as Lucy; Tim Downie (Toast) as Kit Marlowe, and Spencer Jones (Mister Winner) as Kempe.

The BBC haven’t officially given an air date for Upstart Crow‘ Season 3, but we would expect it to appear around Autumn 2018 on BBC Two.
