Last night saw lots of Americans get very excited over some Eagles attacking some Patriots, but outside of the game our colonial cousins refer to as “football”, the rest of the world gets enthused about the trailers – one of which was for Season 2 of HBO’s brilliant Westworld.

Set in a futuristic theme park staffed by artificial beings, guests of ‘Westworld’ can live out their wildest fantasies. However, when the robots begin to run amok, the guests find themselves in a place where anything can happen.

The new trailer doesn’t really give a lot away, other than what we already knew. After all hell broke loose at the end of Season 1, the synthetic hosts of the park appear to be in full revolt, both in the park and behind the scenes. Maeve (Thandie Newton) corralling a group of mechanical bulls into some very freaked out soldiers. Hosts chasing down humans on horseback. Jeffrey Wright’s Bernard with a new, interesting looking android-like shell behind him, which I don’t think we’ve seen before. All voiced over by Evan Rachel Wood’s Dolores, ending with the statement “We can burn it to the ground. From the ashes, build a new world. Our world.”

One thing we don’t see is any sign of any of the other “worlds” being introduced. We saw characters pass through the holding/development area of Samurai World, the ancient Japan-themed park, in last season’s finale, which hinted we may be looking at going to other parks at some point. Creator Jonathan Nolan has been quoted as saying “Well, I’ve been practising with my samurai sword…” so it’s entirely possible that may still happen. It would make sense that if the hosts gain control of Westworld, they would look to free the other parks too.

Along with Wood (Dolores), Wright (Bernard), and Newton (Maeve), we know Ed Harris (Man in Black), James Marsden (Teddy) and Luke Hemsworth (Ashley) all return, as will Jimmi Simpson (William), indicating we will be bouncing around time periods again. Louis Herthum (Dolores’ father Peter Abernathy) and Talulah Riley (Angela) will both return, and have been upped to season regulars this year.

Gustaf Skarsgård (‘Vikings’), Fares Fares (‘Tyrant’, ‘Rogue One’), Betty Gabriel (‘Good Girls Revolt’), Jonathan Tucker (‘Kingdom’, ‘Justified’), Neil Jackson (‘Sleepy Hollow’) and Katja Herbers (‘Divorce’, ‘The Americans’, ‘The Leftovers’) are all new cast for season 2.

As with last year, Westworld‘ will simulcast with the US on Sky Atlantic from 23rd April 2018 at 2am. It’ll then be repeated later in the evening at a more respectable time.
